Sugar Cookies

I got this recipe from a neighbor that I used to babysit for.  I don't know where she found it.

Rolled Sugar Cookies
1 ½ cups sugar
1 1/3 cups butter, softened
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
4 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
4-6 Tablespoons milk

Cream butter and sugar together.  Add eggs and beat.  Add vanilla, milk and dry ingredients.  Chill dough 2-3 hours.  Divide dough into 4 sections.  Roll one section on slightly floured cutting board, about ¼ inch thick.  Cut into desired shapes.  Place on slightly greased baking sheet.  Bake at 350 degrees for 8-10 minutes.  Cool.

The cookie glaze recipe comes from a teacher that I worked with several years ago.  I also do not know where she found it.

 Cookie Glaze
¼ cup boiling water
1 ½ teaspoons vanilla extract
(Note:  vanilla turns glaze brown, try to find a clear extract)
¾ teaspoon almond extract
2 1/8 cups powdered sugar
Food coloring, if desired
Sprinkles

Mix together.  May need to add more boiling water to make the glaze thinner.  Put waxed paper under cooling racks.  Dip cooled cookies into glaze and place on cooling rack to dry.  If using sprinkles, dip 3-4 cookies and then add the sprinkles.  The glaze sets fast, but takes one or more hours to dry completely.

Make Ahead Butterhorns

1 T. dry yeast
¼ c. warm water
½  c. butter
¾ c. milk
½ c. sugar
3 eggs, beaten
¾ tsp. salt
4-4 ½ c. flour
¼ c. butter

Combine water and yeast.  Let it foam up for 5 minutes.  Stir down.  Melt butter in a pan and add milk.  Pour into a bowl.  Add yeast mixture, sugar, eggs, and salt.  Stir in flour gradually until it forms a soft ball.  Cover and let rise until double.  Divide dough in half.  Roll out on floured board into a circle.  Melt ¼ cup butter and use ½ on top.  Cut into 16 pieces, pie-shaped.  Roll each piece up.  Freeze on baking sheet, then store in plastic bag.  Take out 4-5 hours before meal and place on greased baking sheet about 3-4 inches apart.  Bake at 350F. for 12-15 minutes.
